Imperfection as an authentic
and generative language.
Alessandra Nunziante (Turin, 1991) is an Italian visual artist and writer whose practice moves between painting and storytelling, building a language around identity, fragility and transformation. The author of three published novels, she has been recognised with the Golden Palm for Visual Arts (Monte Carlo) and the Berlin City Prize, has exhibited in Paris, Rome and Turin, and in 2026–27 takes part in the international exhibition at the CICA Museum in South Korea. Her work has been featured by Artribune, Corriere, La Stampa, Exibart, RAI and Mondadori.
At the core of her practice is Deformazioni, an ongoing research project that treats imperfection as an authentic and generative language — through essential forms and the tension between balance and alteration.
“My research originates from a bone deformation in my left arm, caused by a benign tumour. From this physical transformation emerged the need to investigate deformity as a human condition.”
My work focuses on the distortions we carry within ourselves and those we recognise in the external world. Through bold, vibrant and playful colours I invite the viewer into a more open and relaxed space — where imperfection becomes the primary language, transforming into an active, conscious and shared presence.
The tear is not weakness. It is the mark of transformation — the body's most honest language; the imperfect form as a site of strength, consciousness and rebirth.
Recent works — where the pupil and the tear give way to a vortex of colour.
In the most recent works of Deformazioni, the pupil and the tear disappear, giving way to a vortex of colour. These faces no longer cry. They choose to be shaped and coloured by everything that surrounds them: imperfection is no longer endured, but embraced as part of transformation.
In these earlier works, we see the embryo of Deformazioni, where the tear first appears as the series' original symbol. It does not represent pain, but strength, awareness, and the refusal to surrender in the face of life's obstacles: a trace of where it all began.
The origin — where the tear first appears as the series' symbol.
The natural evolution of Deformazioni. The gaze meets the animal world, and everything bends and transforms within its beauty — imperfection as a shared condition.
Alongside painting, the written word: three published novels where the same research into identity, fragility and transformation finds another voice.
The work in galleries, spaces and the studio — from Paris to Turin.
